I met up with Rob Dietz last night at the Second Story night club. It was a pretty low key “Wednesday” event, but it was still interesting. He works with a couple of DJ’s that scour the garage sales looking for rare and quirky albums. They put together a mix of old country and totally outdated pop tracks (one was a sort of political protest song against Jimmy Carter), and mix it with video loops of old commercials and movies. The effect is sort of “ambient kitsch” I guess. The picture shows the simple set up that he used. After a while, someone got on stage and started reading poetry while the band warmed up.
I thought the poetry was actually pretty good. I can’t seem to remember any of it though. But he sort of followed the rhythym of the drummer and guitarist as they messed around. Maybe it was the cheap beer?
